We had a wonderful vacation to our family's cabin at Echo Lakes, near Lake Tahoe. My family has been spending summers there since my Grandfather Holmes bought the first cabin on the land in 1931. Access to the cabin is only by boat or a 45-minute hike. The cabin's very rustic: no electricity, a wood stove and high water marks inside from springtime floods during snow thaws. We finally got indoor plubmbing in the 1970s. (Indoor Plumbing == no more outhouse!) It's a very special corner of the world -- so special that Pam and I were married lakeside in 1993.
One of the best things about time at the cabin is hiking back into Desolation Wilderness. This is a fantastic national park with many enjoyable destinations. There are lots of easy day hikes, many mountains to climb, and plenty of great places to camp overnight if you wish.
You can find out more about the Desolation Wilderness at the Eldorado National Forest website.
